History of Medical service to the Village Community

ShanmugaVelayutham General & Maternity Hospital at Cherakulam, a unit of Swami Vivekananda Medical Mission, was started in May, 1970 when Mrs ShenbagaValliammal, wife of Sri ShanmugaVelayutham donated the land of 1.75 acres with a constructed building. The building was modified as a Maternity Hospital and the entire project was coordinated by Sri N Rajagopalan, a leading Advocate of Tirunelveli. He used to visit hospital once a week, with leading Doctors of Tirunelveli to nourish the Hospital in the early stages.

Notable support came from Sri T.S.Rajam of TVS family one of the esteemed Visitors to our Cherakulam hospital. He appreciated our services, supported and motivated our medical team. Rotary Club, Los Angeles, USA provided a 10-bed ward building in the hospital and Rotary Club of Tirunelveli provided a "surgical" ward building in the hospital.


Cherakulam Hospital has been running for 54 years serving the village community in Cherakulam and surrounding villages. It became a well-known Maternity hospital and more than 2500 children were delivered successfully over the years.

The hospital has been ably managed by Dr M. Nambiyappan, M.D.(PAED), D.C.H, Children Specialist, (Retd) Professor, for more than 40 years. He provides free consultation for the patients in Cherakulam hospital and also monitors the hospital operation as the Honorary President. Another key person supporting the hospital is Dr R Sathiyamurthy M.A., M.Phil., Ph.d., Partner in Dinamalar and a successful Industrialist, who is serving as the Honorary Treasurer.


In the function, Sri Sri Perarulalar Ramanuja Jeeyer Swamigal, Jeeyer of Tirukurungudi Mutt is honouring Dr Sri M. Nambiyappan, MD, DCH who is the Honorary President of Shanmuga Velayutham General & Maternity Hospital, Cherakulam.

Over the period of 5 decades many eminent Doctors has served at the hospital, including Dr Kumud Saraspudhe from Maharastra, Dr Rama lyer, Dr Badri Narayanan, Dr M.A. Thamby, Dr M Nagarajan, Captain Dr PK Manickam, Dr S Swamy, Dr S.Govindan, Dr H Sivaramakrishnan, Dr S. Chandar, Dr S. Maragathavalli, Dr S Thanumathi, Dr Venkatraman, Dr MohanaVenkatraman, Dr M Ilango, Dr S Premachandran among others.

To further support the Community, we started organising Mobile Medical Camps, in March 2023 under the name of வீடுதேடிமருத்துவம் (Medical Service at Door-Step) in the villages in and around Cherakulam. Medical consultation and prescribed medicines are being given free of cost in these camps. Dr K Punithavathi, General Physician and our para-medical staff participate in these camps to serve the people.

To enhance the outreach, a new Medical Van has been procured, funded by Dr Sud&Dr Anita Sud, USA; the funding coordinated by India Development and Relief Fund (IDRF), USA. The Dedication of this medical vanon 28th April, 2024, Sunday, marks a new chapter in community service.
